The Amrut Foundation is honoured to have been accorded the prestigious Diamond Donor status by the University of the Witwatersrand, a recognition that underscores our commitment to education and social responsibility. Since establishment in 2021, Amrut has invested over 3 million in bursaries, aiding more than 80 students at Wits alone. Unlike traditional bursary programs that prioritize academic performance alone, Amrut’s approach is distinct in its focus on taking into account individual
circumstances, acknowledging that socio-economic challenges can impede academic success.
The ‘Fees Must Fall’ movement of 2016 shed light on the financial hardships faced by students, which often lead to underperformance or exclusion from higher education. In response, Amrut has adopted a holistic approach, considering personal
narratives of students and providing support that has led to marked improvements in their academic achievements by alleviating the burden of student debt.
The University of the Witwatersrand has recognized this substantial contribution to student welfare, acknowledging Amrut through this accolade. During a recent student networking event, Ms. Purvi Purohit from the Wits Fundraising Department
expressed gratitude to the trustees of the Amrut Foundation for their thoughtful approach. Amrut on its part commended the efforts of the Wits Academic Development Unit, led by Professor Genga and supported by Ms. Itumeleng Tshwane and team, for their pivotal role in securing comprehensive support for students. Both the university and Amrut reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining this fruitful partnership for the foreseeable future, ensuring ongoing support for students.
