Amrut Shares Moments of Laughter At Children’s Homes in Cape Town

As part of their recent visit to Cape Town, members of the Amrut Foundation visited two Homes with an excellent track record in supporting childhood and youth care and education.

On their tour of the Realistic Children and Youth Home situated in Athlone, the Amrut team was elated to witness the children at play on the mega-jungle gym facility they had revamped and donated some months prior. The Amrut team discussed the vision and work of Realistic with the management in detail, and thereby better understood their method of imparting life skills through
structured programs, to children and youth who are resident at their Home in Zwartdam. The Amrut team was glad to spend the entire day at Realistic, sharing a meal of hot pizzas and chip-rolls to the children and youth. In addition, raincoats especially made by Khuphuka as part of their Sari-Re range were also presented to the children and youth, with due attention paid to the correct fit for each person. This sewing social-enterprise and training facility, located in Bertrams, Johannesburg, was initially supported by seed funding from the Amrut Foundation and is overseen by the management of Tshimangadzo Care Center. The Sar-Re range, known for its unique upcycling approach, breathes new life into saris that possess both aesthetic value and remain in good condition.

Whilst the children laughed and compared the patterns of their new raincoats, the staff of Amrut and Realistic took the opportunity to discuss their respective work and opportunities for further partnership.

The Amrut team also visited the Children of Light Educare (COLT), a registered non-profit that provides free quality education to children in need. COLT places emphasis on providing for the mental and emotional well-being of children through equipping them with lessons and activities based on the universal principles of Integral Yoga. The young pre-schoolers were also treated to a
feast of pizza and chip-rolls, and presented with their very own Sari-Re raincoats. The staff at Realistic and COLT were all also presented with Sari-Re raincoats to battle the torrential rains of the Cape Town winter. After inspecting the prior renovation work carried out by Amrut, the team resolved to extend its resources to the COLT team to sustain their well-rounded educational
curriculum and wellbeing programs.
